In 2003 the Institute received a $1 million grant from the American Legacy Foundation to establish the On The Ground Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program. The organization brought together three Historically Black Colleges and Universities to address tobacco prevention and cessation on the campuses of the institutions and their surrounding communities. That success coupled with the strong commitment of the Institute to continually address the needs of the minority community, oftentimes beyond business development led it to undertake the On The Ground Project Smoking Cessation and Prevention Project.

 In addition to the smoking habits of college age students, The On the Ground Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Project identified the tremendous health care issues and disparities now plaguing minority communities; hypertension, diabetes, cancer and obesity all have a tremendous impact on the economic vibrancy of a community.

The Institute is engaged in several initiatives associated with addressing the differences in health outcomes based on ethnicity, income and other psycho-social issues. Current projects include:
